Chapter 23: Rachel

WAKING UP PROVED TO be hard after the wine. Rachel shouldn’t have allowed herself to slip back into sleep. Probably because Brenda jostled her bed like she led it down rapids on a large crazy river.

Eyelids slit open, Rachel moaned with a bump of the bed.

Brenda stopped pushing and leaned over her sister. “Are you okay? I’m trying to get you to the other side of the cafeteria. If you can, just relax. I’m pushing you, okay?”

How did Rachel tell Brenda she was a terrible driver and the bumps and shakes caused more pain to Rachel’s already exhausted body? Apparently, she didn’t say a thing, because she leaned her head back on the pillow and watched with a smidge of carsickness as each and every ceiling panel passed by overhead.

She remembered. “What are you doing here? I thought you and Josh were going to check on the kids?” And leave Daniel with Rachel. That was the most important part. She couldn’t remember why she needed him, but he had to stay with her. Somehow. He had to. Her sanity depended on it. That much she knew.

“Yeah, I’m moving you somewhere safer, where you and Daniel will be safe.” Brenda’s words came as if from somewhere far off.

Maybe for a little bit longer, Rachel could sleep. The bed hadn’t hit anymore bumps in a few seconds and the rocking motion lulled her like a cradle.

The bed stopped, but Rachel didn’t bother opening her eyes. Brenda had said Rachel and Daniel would be safe.

Brenda wouldn’t lie to her sister. She knew better than that.
